So What Does Having a Job Mean To You?
So what exactly does having a job mean to you? I'm not sure if it is something that you have actually stopped to consider. Perhaps what we need to do to understand what a job really means is to ask someone who doesn't have one.I really started to get interested in this topic about 12 months ago. It occurs to me that a "job" is a pretty key component in building our self esteem. It lets us deliver a service, get rewarded for it and feel that we have somewhere we belong in the world. Don't get me wrong, it's not the only thing but I'll argue it is a pretty important component.
It's my belief that when we have a level of self esteem we are in much better position to make a contribution and help those around us; our family, our community, our nation, and our fellow man, wherever they may be. That's why one of the organisations that we believe in so much is Opportunity International. For every day that someone works for 4impact we give a small contribution to Opportunity International that they then put towards people in developing countries to start their own business (get them a job) and help break the cycle of poverty. We love it because the money raised isn't just charity but a loan that is repaid over 97% of the time so that it can be re-lent to let someone else start their own journey. You can read more about this initiative here.
I believe that in supporting this organisation we are helping people to get a job that will ultimately help them build their own self esteem and make a positive difference in their own life, their family's life and the lives of others in their community.
